Event description

Description

The first interpretive sign on the Woden Heritage Trail was constructed in July 2012, near the top of Gledden St, Chifley, beside the cycle/walk track. It is alongside the remaining part of the old (gravel) Long Gully Road that once ran all the way from Cooma Road to the old Kambah Road.

This heritage walk covers significant parts of where the suburb now stands. You will learn about the old roads, watercourses, the dam, farms, families and paddocks of Chifley's past as well as hear about significant events and stories.

Meet: In the (downhill) car-park of Chifley Wellness Hub (the old Chifley/Melrose primary school) on Maclaurin Cr Chifley. The Wellness Centre is closed on Sundays.

Length and terrain: The walk will take about 1 1/2 hours and is on paved and unpaved paths.

Bad weather: The walk leader will be at the meeting point where a decision will be made as to whether to proceed or postpone.

Walk leader: Neville Bleakley is a long-time resident of Chifley who has become interested in the history of Chifley (indeed all of the Woden Valley) before development of Chifley in 1966 from soldier-settlement allotments post World War 1.
