Event description
Reconnecting and reimagining Herbaria - a day for Volunteers at the Western Australian Herbarium

About this event

As part of National Volunteer week, the Wildflower Society of Western Australia is partnering with the Western Australian Herbarium, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) to bring together enthusiastic volunteers from WA's herbaria for a day to share experiences, learn new techniques, and inspire collecting, documenting and learning about the flora and natural environments within their regions. Through a series of activities, staff at the Western Australian Herbarium will provide basic training to volunteers from the regional herbaria in current best practices for managing collections, legal requirements for collecting, identification, and processing of botanical specimens. The Reference and Research Collections will be available for the identification of specimens, and staff will be available to assist. We invite Herbarium Volunteers based at the Herbarium in Kensington to share their knowledge of preparing specimens for long-term preservation with regional guests, and celebrate the efforts of volunteers in WA’s herbaria by enjoying a light lunch and sharing stories about the amazing diversity of the Western Australian flora and the people that strive to understand and protect it.

We thank Volunteering WA and Lotterywest for financial support for the event.
