Event description
Join Zeinab Saleh Mahfoud as she celebrates her collection : Heart of Heritage. Exploring identity, culture & belonging in Sydney, Australia

About this Event

Heart of Heritage is a project that aims to stimulate discussion within diverse communities, particularly with young people, about positive expressions of individual and collective cultural identity.

The portrait collection explores the joyful connections we as diasporas experience within our cultures while living in Australia. The collection was designed to highlight new avenues of cultural identity by focusing on personal connections while promoting diversity and representation within the art space.

About the Event:

Which culture do you identify with?

How do you connect with your cultural heritage?

How do you continue to explore and express your cultural connections while living in Australia?

These questions and more were asked by Zeinab Saleh Mahfoud as she photographed 10 young people from Western Sydney over the span of a year. On opening night, hear from guest speakers about diversity in the arts. Enjoy finger food and a poetry performance from Naz Sharifi.

Opening night will be at PYT Fairfield (19 Harris Street, Fairfield) on April 17th, 6:30pm for a 7pm start. However, the exhibition will remain at PYT Fairfield between April 19th - 22nd and can be seen during business hours.

Sponsored by Multicultural Youth Affairs Network (MYAN NSW) and PYT Fairfield.

About the photographer:

Zeinab Saleh Mahfoud is a third-generation migrant, first-generation born Lebanese-Australian artist based in Sydney. With a professional background in interior architecture, humanitarian aid and community development, her passion for photography has been her greatest solace and motivation.

"My photography is an expression of beauty and simplicity. It asks us to look at the mundane, the items in life we glance over, and to breathe; to take time and find grace in a world filled with negativity.

Photography has always been a creative outlet and a way to express my thoughts. In recent days, photography has become a voice and platform for stories and cultures untold.

My only aim is to evoke joy and positivity, and hope, that in time, you may be filled with the urge to search for the long, precious hours until sunrise."
