Introducing the Rock My World Workshop for MELBOURNE!

NDIS Hours for this event - 12 hours

FOR Secondary School deaf/hard of hearing students (age 12-18 years) only

Rock My World - FILMING WORKSHOP #1 - Two day Workshop

Saturday 6 April to Sunday 7 April 2019

We will be focusing on Character building, script work and story boarding with basic filming skills depending on time.

Our Filming Workshop Description

Morning: We’ll kickstart our day with some ice breakers. Have a laugh and get to know each other. Don’t worry, we won’t put you on the spot. Your giggles will bound to brush away those nerves. We’ll get to business and explain how we run through our workshops for the weekend. We always start with an introduction so you can all get to know us and well, how deaf we are.

Then we can get stuck into some History about short films and how they were made. We’ll inspire you with a few Charlie Chaplin series and the latest films of 2019, including last years’ winners from the Hear For You Short Film competition. During our break we will load up on some brain food to keep our minds energised. After that we might play a quick game before we head back inside to focus on Character building around our theme for the year.

Whilst we learn about our characters for our short film, we will then start on the first step of our script. The bio and blurb of what our short film will be about. Each teen will come up with their own idea and script work. This will help with our character building which is the fun part of film making. Your character will have an all round kind of personality. We like to get our teens to use a deaf theme, tell a story they’d wish to tell or simply be adventurous and surprise us with their imaginations. We have always been blown away by the ideas our teens have come up with in the past.

In the Afternoon: after our bellies are full of pizza and garlic bread. We will get tucked into finishing our script. If we are ahead of time. We will go over the basic’s of film techniques and visuals for our Storyboard for Sunday.
Then we say goodnight but not goodbye, as we will meet again the next morning.

As teenagers we all love a sleep in, but not this morning, we’ll be bright eyed and ready to begin our day. After another brain teaser or game or two, we will start sketching our Story Board. The vision that will create our short film. You will be given the opportunity to bring your stick man to life and we will teach you different ways to film your scene from your script to show you how to be creative with a camera, iphone, ipad or go pro etc.

We will spend the majority of our day fine tuning our script and story board before heading out in the afternoon to spend some time filming.

We will go outside film various scenes so we know how to work from paper to reality.

You will learn the nicks and tricks to creating your short film. A short film we hope you’ll send into the HFY Short film competition this year, which is also sponsored by Australian Hearing.

Sounds good right? If you have any questions, email david.brady@hearforyou.com.au

Our exclusive Filming Workshop which has been a hit in NSW & QLD will be the first in Melbourne, Victoria.
Our teens will learn how to make a short film, using a simple device such as their mobile phone or Ipad!
We will learn all there is to know about the short film industry, learning how to storyboard, film and edit.
Maybe this will inspire our teens to enter Short Film competions such as 48 Hour Film Festival which our very own Victorian Co-ordinator - Emilie Biggar succesfully entered last year, snatching a nomination for Best Make-up for her film "HER" in 2017.

At the end of the #1 Workshop, we will ask the teens to create their very own 5 minute short story to showcase upon our return TBD. The theme/genre will be decided by Australian Hearing.

Their short film will be awarded, based on
- Best Actor
- Best Actress
- Best Costume
- Best Makeup
- Best Film!
- Audience Choice Award

These awards will be decided by Australian Hearing, also the 2 selected winners across NSW, QLD or VIC will have their film showcased throughout the 150 Australian Hearing centres across the country and their social media pages!

We're aiming to host Workshop from 9am - 3pm each day

If you have any other curious Questions, feel free to email me - emilie.biggar@hearforyou.com.au

Can I use my current NDIS funding to cover Hear For You?

Yes this is possible. After purchasing the NDIS Participant Registration fee ticket, please contact David Brady on david.brady@hearforyou.com.au to inform him whether you are:

  1. NDIA Agency managed i.e. they pay all invoices on your behalf

  2. Self-funded i.e. the NDIA have given you a lump sum to use as per your agreed NDIS plan

You will need to give us your NDIS number and the number of hours or funding amount that you have secured with your NDIA planner.

How many NDIS hours are actually needed for this event?

  • RMW Film Making Workshops - 12 NDIS Hours for this event

What if I am not on the NDIS/I am not eligible for the NDIS and I would to love to attend, what do I do?

1. You only need to pay $50 to enrol as this year the program is supported by the Australian Hearing Film Festival support funding.

We are conscious of the fact many deaf and hard of hearing teenagers are yet to be accepted to their NDIS and need more time. Hence we are pleased to have this funded to make sure as many teenagers don't miss out due to waiting.

Yes, of course! Any deaf/hard of hearing teenager is most welcome to enrol in the workshops :)
