    Description

How can we transition to an environmentally sustainable and resilient healthcare system?

This forum will look at big picture changes needed in our healthcare system to address climate change and environmental sustainability, and what individual hospitals and health services can do to reduce healthcare’s environmental impacts.

The forum offers an opportunity to network, collaborate and learn from our colleagues’ experiences. We encourage anyone interested in environmentally sustainable healthcare, from policy makers, healthcare strategists, clinicians, facility managers, sustainability officers, healthcare managers, environmental services, to attend.

    Download the full program here.

    Day 1 - Monday 21st May

Day one will focus on Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) in building new projects, asset renewal and extension of existing buildings and building maintenance works. We will explore ways to reduce the operational costs associated with buildings and facilities; the environmental impacts of constructing, refurbishing and operating buildings; improving energy and water efficiency of buildings and facilities; and providing a healthy indoor environment. We can demonstrate leadership to the community by adopting and promoting sustainable building design suitable for your region’s current and future climate; and reduce reliance on non-renewable grid electricity

    Day 2 - Tuesday 22nd May

We’re thrilled to host Dr David Pencheon OBE, founder Director of the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) for NHS England and Public Health England, as keynote to kick of day two of the forum. Dr Pencheon is being hosted in Australia by the University of Sydney. The SDU was established in 2007 with the task of ensuring the NHS operated in an environmentally sustainable way. Between 2007 and 2015 the NHS reduced its carbon emissions by 11%, exceeding the 10% target set in 2009, and despite health and care activity increasing by 18%. David is a wealth of knowledge, so we promise to allow plenty of time for him to answer your questions.

Day two will include presentations of up to date research on the carbon footprint of healthcare in Australia and theory on more sustainable models of healthcare. This will be followed by case study presentations highlighting successes and challenges in implementing environmental projects in a range of areas from energy efficiency to waste reduction to sustainable procurement.

In the afternoon there will themed focus group discussions that will give attendees the chance to test out potential projects, gain ideas, receive feedback, and identify opportunities for collaboration. The forum will conclude with project pitch presentations. Attendees will be given an opportunity to 'pitch' their project, with Daniels Health sponsoring $1,000 prize money to the best idea as seed funding.
