About this event

We would like to invite you to join Professor Harry Blagg and Adjunct Professor Victoria Hovane from the School of Law, University of Western Australia, to examine the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Law and Culture in responding to family violence.

Professor Blagg and Adjunct Professor Hovane will explore the weaknesses and deficiencies in the application of mainstream law when responding to family violence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities that has amplified the growing call for a pluralistic approach that can accommodate both systems of Law. This is a powerful and compelling narrative that situates family violence experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women within the context of colonisation and intergenerational trauma, recognising multiple causes for violence in these communities not just a single force of male dominance and patriarchy.

Their research is grounded in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices – voices that have long advocated for culturally safe solutions to family violence in their communities, with Aboriginal Cultural and Law as the framework for these community-led responses. Breaking through the myths and misperceptions of how Aboriginal Law and Culture operates reveals a system that balances punitive measures with healing responses to end cycles of violence.

We hope that you will join us to hear more about how Aboriginal Law and Culture can bring about the positive and necessary change to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The talk will be held from 3.00 pm on Wednesday 16 September on Level 23 of the David Malcolm Justice Centre. Please ensure you have consent of your Manager to attend before you RSVP to book for the event. For those staff unable to attend in person, the talk will be filmed and broadcast for your convenience.
