South Australian tourism in the early twentieth century
About this event
By 1910 travel for leisure was on the rise. A tourist bureau was set up to market South Australia to locals and attract interstate visitors.
In the mid-1930s paid annual leave was gradually introduced. Rail travel, bus and boat tours became popular. Car ownership and caravans put holiday escapes within reach of many, not just the well-to-do.
Thousands of travel posters, brochures, postcards were produced. Many of these items survive in the Library’s collections and are featured in today’s program.
