Description

Zhaozhou was being observed by the director of their monastery, he was welcoming new monks as they arrived after the long journey through many mountains.

Zhaozhou asked a newly arrived monk, “Have you been here before?”

The monk said, “Yes.”

Zhaozhou said, “Lets drink some tea.”

Later he asked another monk, “Have you been here before?”

The monk said, “No”

Zhaozhou said, “Lets drink some tea.”

The director asked Zhaozhou, “Why did you say ‘Lets drink some tea.’ to the both the monk who has been here before and the one who has not been here?”

Zhaozhou said, “Director!”

She said, “Yes?”

Zhaozhou said, “Lets drink some tea.”

The May tea ceremony afternoon will be in the luscious and inspiring grounds of Warby Sabi in Warburton and it will focus less on the demonstration of ceremony and more on getting to know the spirit of tea. To do this we will drink Bowl Tea.

Bowl Tea is the most gentle and simple of tea rituals, because of this it lets you get most directly in touch with the gentle spirit of tea. Like the Tao and Zen koans, it is paradoxically extremely simple and infinitely complex with meaning and implications you cannot put into words. If you can explain it, it is not the Tao.

Bowl Tea is performed buy ritually purifying a tea bowl, placing a few leaves of living tea inside of it, pouring hot water over the leaves and drinking the infusion directly from the bowl. Three bowls are drunk in silence. It flows from there.

Bowl Tea allows you to watch tea leaves wake up from their sleeping state, unfurling in front of you, in your bowl, in your energy field. This direct visual connection with the tea creates another sense for you to directly experience tea through. By opening all of our senses to tea we allow it to tell all aspects of it’s story and we can receive it’s interminable lessons.

As usual our afternoon will begin with a short workshop on the ritual we are about to undertake, giving you just enough information to put your mind at ease so you can allow yourself to experience the ritual. The ceremony will flow for two hours and then we will have a Q&A share session so we can discuss what came up for us and solidify the experience for ourselves.

Things to consider: it takes 1.5 hours to drive from Melbourne to Warburton. The spring is 15 minutes drive up the mountain from Warby Sabi, we highly recommend you arrive early to the region so you can gather water to take home (Start collecting glass bottles now). It could get quite cold so bring warm clothes even if it feels like a warm day in the city. We will be happy to facilitate carpooling between guests, If you are interested please email info@storminateacup.com.au when you buy your ticket and put Warby Sabi Carpool as the subject.

And the Healesville Hotel has a fabulous restaurant so you might like to stop in there on the way home for dinner.
