Harmony Day - Sri Lankan Cooking Demonstration with Karunika Pemarathne
Monday 22nd March, 11.30am - 1.00pm
Palmerston Recreation Centre, 11 The Boulevard, Palmerston
Karunika was born in a beautiful coastal town of Southern Sri Lanka. She was lucky to live in an environment where she was exposed to indigenous knowledge including the culinary art and home remedies by her parents and grandparents who had been utilizing such knowledge in their day-to-day activities. Today she is ready to share it with all of you.
Karunika is deep rooted with the traditional and indigenous food culture in Sri Lanka and she now likes to teach others, sharing the secrets and techniques of traditional Sri Lankan cuisines and provide people with a deeper insight into this beautiful island’s historic culture.
"When I was a child, I used to sit on the floor and watch how my grandmother was preparing vegetables for cooking. Early in the morning she would grind all the necessary spices separately on traditional grinding stone and arrange a beautifully coloured plate of spices. Then a pinch of salt is placed on each nugget of spices to prevent the staling of the ground spices. The attractive mixture of colours of the nuggets of spices and the aroma were very attractive and amazing." - Karunika
