What we’ll do
We'll be going into a hands-on beekeeping fun and educational experience. After an introduction and safety lesson you will be taught how to be a beekeeper including topics such as tools and equipment, bee life cycles and roles, multiplying bees, catching and preventing swarms, pests and diseases, Queen rearing. Flow hive invention. Q & A.
Following the theory lesson, we will get into the protective suits and head into the yard. We will first light the smoker (to make the bees docile) then I will demonstrate opening up a beehive for an inspection. Then it is over to you, it's your turn to open up a beehive, pull out the frames one by one and try to find the queen, check she is laying eggs properly, check there are no pests or parasites attacking the hive on the inside and check the bees are building the comb straight. Tastings of various honey to follow.
PROTECTIVE SUITS PROVIDED. Please wear light colour socks. No children under 12. I only have adult-sized suits & gloves. It would be large on children over 12 but it will work.
I'd be very surprised if someone got stung by a bee but there is a slight chance. For that reason, I would not suggest this for those with an anaphylactic bee allergy.
4 hour time is approximate.
Please note: By attending you agree this event is an 'at your own risk' event and you waive any claim should you be stung by a bee or injured in any way.
What I’ll provide
PROTECTIVE BEE SUITS
Tea, Coffee and Biscuits
What to bring
Fully enclosed shoes essential,
Normal length WHITE OR LIGHT COLOUR socks, the thicker the better. NOT ANKLE SOCKS. Although it is not guaranteed, bees like to target dark colour when they are disturbed.
A baseball cap/hat (helps keep the veil from touching your face)
Pen and paper if you wish to take notes
Light coloured clothing is also preferable.
Preferably don't wear perfume.
IMPORTANT PLEASE READ You should receive an email with the house number in Lake St at the bottom of the invoice after you make a booking. If you do not see the house number please contact me asap.
Please park your car in my long driveway and if full can park on the grass out front.
If light rain class is conducted under a 3m gazebo. If extremely poor weather the class can be cancelled and you can either choose to receive a refund or reschedule to another date.
If you cancel with less than a weeks notice a fee can be applied, increasing the closer it is to the start date. Cancellations more than 1 week from the start date will be refunded minus the non-refundable portion that Eventbrite keeps as their fee.
Reviews really do help a lot, if you've enjoyed the class then a review on my Google maps listing or Facebook page for Beekeeping Workshop Newcastle is much appreciated.
