Event description

Description

This hike follows the coastal boardwalks and chain of stairs from Marino Rocks to Hallett Cove and back. We will also be including some side-trails through the Hallett Cove Conservation Park that make up the "Glacial Hike" so we can see the famous "Sugarloaf" geological formation. The Conservation Park is actually full of fascinating geological/geographical formations and we will see quite a few of them along our route. You will also see lovely coastal views and may even be lucky enough to spot dolphins or seals.

This hike is a killer workout for your legs and butt - with a large number of stairs (up and down) and rocky/uneven surface with loose rocks/gravel in places along the trail. It will be more challenging for a beginner hiker than our Morialta hikes, but it is definitely a great route to do if you are training for a multi-day walking tour as it helps build your endurance and key muscles (glutes, calves, quads) while also giving you some cardio/aerobic exercise at the same time. Unless you have pre-existing medical issues/injuries e.g. issues affecting your knees, hips, ankles this is still suitable for beginners as we wont be walking too fast! If you want to see some photos of the hiking trail before booking, please look at our Hallett Cove photo album on the JetSetGo Fitness Facebook page.

We will be meeting at the Marino Rocks Train Station, heading down to the coast from there, and starting the boardwalk hike to Hallett Cove Conservation Park. There is an option for you to leave our hiking group at Hallett Cove if ~5km of stair climbing and hiking is enough for you - the Hallett Cove Beach Train Station is not far (about 1km) from where we will take a break at the halfway point. So you could opt to walk from near the Boatshed Cafe in Hallett Cove to the Hallett Cove Beach Train Station to catch the train back to the starting point if you don't want to do the return trip on foot with us. If you do the complete the entire route with us, it will be approx. 10km.

Arthritis Foundation of South Australia: This hike is one of the trek training opportunities for the Arthritis SA trekkers who are hiking the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail in October to raise money for children with arthritis. A certain number of spots on this hike have been reserved for the Arthritis SA trekkers as part of a new partnership between JetSetGo Fitness & Arthritis SA. https://www.arthritissa.org.au/

Requirements for participating:

Everyone participating will need to sign a waiver to say they are exercising at their own risk before commencing the hike. All participants will also be required to complete a pre-exercise screening form to help identify anyone who may be at higher risk of an adverse event during the hike. E.g. If you have particular medical issues/injuries or recent joint replacements in your knees/hips/ankles/hips this would not be suitable without medical clearance.

If you are interested in joining us, but are concerned you may not have the fitness level to take part - please contact Sarah before registering - she will be happy to chat over the phone and help you decide if it would be suitable or not and whether you might need to seek medical clearance first. JetSetGo Fitness may refuse to allow a client to participate if they are deemed to be at higher risk of an adverse event during the activity for health/fitness reasons or for other safety reasons e.g. due to not bringing appropriate gear/clothing on the hike. See www.jetsetgofitness.com for further terms and conditions.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Minimum age = 18 years old. Not pregnant and no pre-existing injuries that could be made worse by hiking.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

We are meeting at the Marino Rocks Train Station. You can get the Train from Adelaide to Marino Rocks - it is the Seaford rail line.

There is also the option to leave our hike at the half-way point if your legs have had enough of the stair climbing. Our half-way point is near the Boatshed cafe in Hallett Cove, and from there it is only approx. 1km walk along suburban streets to the Hallett Cove Beach train station.

What can I bring into the event?

Wear comfortable clothes for walking, and sturdy walking shoes (e.g. sneakers or hiking boots, not thongs).

The track is quite exposed to the elements (no shelter from wind, sun and rain), therefore you need to bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen, clothes that cover your shoulders), and if the weather might be rainy you will also need to bring a rain jacket and warm clothes.

Bring a backpack with your own water (1L is recommended as a guide - there are water bubblers/fountains at a few places along the track where you can re-fill your water bottle if needed).

Bring something to eat for snacks. There is a cafe at the half-way mark so you may be able to buy coffee or something to eat there - but sometimes it can be quite busy so the wait can be a bit long so we recommend packing a snack if you can :-)

Feel free to bring a camera (or your phone) to take pictures.

Arthritis SA trekkers - it would be a good training idea to bring your daypack/backpack with approx. 5kg of gear to practice walking with added weight on your back.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

If you have questions about the difficulty of the hike, your fitness levels, what to bring etc please feel free to contact Sarah. You can contact Sarah on her mobile 0410 498 122 (9am - 6pm please), or by email jetsetgo.fitness@gmail.com

Sarah is a Personal Trainer with JetSetGo Fitness.

What's the refund policy?

No refunds if less than 24 hours notice is given. If you need to cancel before this, then a refund may be possible (minus the Eventbrite fees). If the hike is cancelled by the organizer e.g. due to extremely bad weather on the day, refunds will be available. If JetSetGo Fitness has concerns over the suitability of the hike based on safety, health or fitness issues, you may not be allowed to participate in the event. In this case a refund will be offered.
