Trading Tales - E-commerce platforms for Indian craft
E-commerce is particularly innovative in India. Many new online trading fields have emerged for Indian crafts that provide much richer engagement than the standard retail environment. In some ways, they may seem to be reviving traditional elements of craft. This involves not on the kind of direct contact experienced in street markets, but also role of the object in story-telling. But as a new medium, e-commerce raises many questions, particularly about its benefits to artisans. Dr Kevin Murray is a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Adjunct Professor at RMIT University and editor of Garland magazine (www.garlandmag.com) which will have a special issue on India in December. He also coordinates the Sangam Project, which since 2011 has been developing and maintaining a Code of Practice for Partnerships in Craft & Design (www.sangamproject.net).
