Description

Mixed Reality Challenge…

Learn about it, then build it!

Why:

You’ve no doubt seen a bunch of Augmented and Virtual Reality demos on YouTube. You might have even tried a few in real life. But how do you start creating experiences using these technologies?

With Augmented and Virtual Realities becoming increasingly part of day to day digital experiences, this workshop provides an introduction to Mixed Reality and how you can start integrating them into design solutions using real world data and content from the State Library of NSW' vast collection.

You’ll be introduced to the different concepts and technologies that encompass Mixed Reality. Then kickstart the challenge where you can use State Library of NSW cultural content from Sydney and beyond to create a Mixed Reality experience, completely in the web that showcases our cultural heritage in new and exciting ways, or uncovers parts of the city that remain hidden to this very day.

Bring along your laptop and smart devices and get your hands dirty in the Mixed Reality challenge. By the end of the session, you will have started created a working immersive experience. It can be as complex or simple as you like. We'll show you examples of experiences created using the data sets on offer to get your imagination kick started. The creation experience requires no knowledge of coding or visual design, but if you are a designer or developer, then you can use your skills in these areas.

What:

This workshop session is a chance to get started on your challenge submission.

The challenge will remain open until the end of October when entries will be judged and a prize of a 360 Nikon Key Mission camera and a few other goodies will be awarded. Entries will be judged by DX Lab and awe.

All participants also receive an awe app to create web-based Mixed Reality experiences free for 6 months (valued at AU$228).

Where:

State Library of NSW, brought to you by awe (https://awe.media) and DX Lab, SLNSW (http://dxlab.sl.nsw.gov.au)

When:

Tuesday October 17, 2017

10am - 2pm

If you can't make the whole session, come along for the first couple of hours to get started and learn more about the challenge!

Who is it for?:

Creatives and web developers, or anyone with an interest in emerging technologies.

You don’t have to know how to code to create compelling Mixed Reality experiences.

You can use whatever tools you want, however the folk at https://awe.media will be providing 6 months access to their platform so you can create web-based MIxed Reality experiences using the awe drag and drop user interface, or adding your own custom Javascript and CSS.

Who is behind it:

DX Lab

The DX Lab is Australia’s first cultural-heritage innovation lab that builds and supports new ways of design thinking, experimentation and deep research with digital technologies.

The DX Lab is a place where innovation and collaboration are explored. We deliver creative, engaging and new ways to explore the Library’s collections, data sets and services through a diverse range of digital experiences. We use existing and emerging technologies to build digital experiences onsite, online and on tour. We are a place for creative partnerships with digital peers, cultural heritage organisations, students, researchers, artists and creators.

awe

Rob Manson and Alexandra Young (co-founders of https://awe.media, the world’s first completely web-based Mixed Reality creation tool) have been actively involved in Mixed Reality research and development for 12 years, launching the world’s first mobile Augmented Reality content management platform back in 2009. Since then the team have been driving web standards to the point they can support Mixed Reality in the web. Rob Manson, awe.media CEO is globally recognised as a pioneer and thought leader in Mixed Reality. He is an Invited Expert with the W3C, the Khronos group and the ISO. Rob is also the co-editor of the W3C specification bringing support for Depth Sensors (e.g. Kinect, Tango, Hololens, etc.) to your web browser. He was recently described by the Principal Engineer at Intel as “...one of the visionaries in the field of Mixed Reality (AR & VR) and the first to evangelise mixed reality using open web technologies”. Alex has been involved in UX design for over 15 years, including setting up the first cross functional User Experience team across interactive TV, mobile and web for Optus back in 2002.

They have also been running Immersive for the past 4 years; a meetup that takes place a few times a year and covers sessions on AR, VR, MR, XR and wearables topics.
