About this event
The history of this beautiful village emerges as we move around the main historical sites. The history starts with the Gundungurra and Dhurag Aboriginal people right through its time as a popular tourist resort, with many guesthouses, up to the present day. Key points of interest are:
- The Station – its important role in the development of Leura;
- The 1957 bushfire – this destroyed a large part of Leura including a prominent guesthouse, Chateau Napier;
- Leura Mall – the centrepiece of Leura with its wonderful range of shops and historical buildings;
- The Ritz – opened in 1892 as the Leura Coffee Palace and a prominent part of local history in its days as a guest house. It is the earliest, grandest and longest lived of all Leura tourist establishments. The Ritz had state significance as a major hotel for three quarters of a century;
- Railway Parade, Malvern Road and the lower section of Leura Mall – a range of beautiful old houses and guesthouses with spectacular gardens; and
- Lone Pine Gates and Memorials – There is a gateway at the entrance which was designed as a memorial to the men of Leura who fought in WW1. Through the gates are the Red Cross WW1 Memorial Rose Garden and Lone Pine Peace Park Memorial.
Stories of the people who have lived here and events help to create a picture of what life in Leura has been like over time. Many examples of traditional guest houses, workman cottages and original shops can be seen along the way.
A scrumptious morning tea is included thanks to our partner, Bygone Beautys Treasured Teapot Museum.
Attendees are to meet outside Leura Railway station at the top of "The Mall".
