Event description

Description

Professors Andrew Garnett (Director, UQ Centre for Coal Seam Gas), and Peta Ashworth (Chair in Sustainable Energy Futures) are delighted to welcome Associate Professor Robert Perrons to give our fifth presentation for 2019.

Robert is an Associate Professor of Technology Management and Strategy at the Queensland University of Technology.

TITLE

Robert will be speaking on "Uberizing Energy: How Digital Technologies Will Change the Competitive Landscape of the Energy Sector"

ABSTRACT

From how we move around cities to how we buy household items, digital technologies have brought about significant changes over the past 20 years in many aspects of our lives and in almost every part of the marketplace. While these changes may have happened first and most conspicuously with the meteoric rise of companies like Uber and Amazon, however, similar architectural shifts are starting to unfold in the energy sector as well. By examining “fast clockspeed” industries and unpacking the market forces and competitive dynamics that have contributed to these shake-ups and significantly new business models, this talk will explain how the energy market of the future will probably look significantly different from how it looks today.

Following the presentation, the audience will be invited to participate in a question and answer session.

He has a B.Eng. in mechanical engineering from McMaster University in Canada, a Master's degree in Technology & Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a PhD in engineering from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Gates Cambridge Scholar. He is a Fellow of both the UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Engineers Australia, and is chartered as a Eur. Ing. in Europe. Rob is a member of the United Nations Resources and Energy Expert Group, and a technical adviser to MIT's Mining, Oil & Gas Club and several energy and resource sector technology startups around the world.
