Event description

Description

Significant advancement in battery technology is a key factor behind the increasing availability of electric vehicles and other electricity storage applications. This in turn drives up the demand for battery minerals (lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, etc). Western Australia, through the Greenbushes Mine, has been a world leader in lithium mineral production since 1985. Newer mines such as Mt Cattlin and Pilgangoora will ensure leadership in the foreseeable future.

The Chinese company Tianqi (齐锂) is one of the biggest global lithium producer. Tianqi has major presence in WA through its half indirect ownership of Greenbushes mine, and the recently commissioned A$700 million lithium hydroxide plant in Kwinana.

Our speaker Phil Thick is the General Manager of Tianqi Lithium Australia and is responsible for overseeing construction and operation of the Kwinana plant. Phil is a civil engineer whose globetrotting career spanned operations in Alcoa, Shell and Coogee Chemicals. Phil also chairs Perth Symphony Orchestra and was the previous chairperson for Avivo, one of WA’s largest Not-for-Profits.

Phil will give an overview of Tianqi’s activities and discuss the importance of relationship in Tianqi’s development.
