Curator Eleanor Scicchitano and Director Priya Namana invite artists to speak to the way in which care features in their practices.
About this event
Titled A Soft Pulse the 2022 Gertrude Street Projection Festival invites artists to celebrate and examine a spectrum of care; from love through to resistance, vulnerability through strength. Curator Eleanor Scicchitano and Director Priya Namana will reflect on the curatorial rationale and festival framework, and invite artists to speak to the way in which care features not only in the works, but their ongoing practice.
Artists:
Henry Wolff’s practice is concerned with images that articulate vulnerability in their participation in the world/s and of their collaborators. With an empathetic observational methodology, they produce moving image, photographic and performance works that attend to the power of marginality and diffraction within society. Through attention to human connection, they explore entangled experiences of being and foster the moral virtues of compassion, care, and love.
Anne Wagner is an educator in the Art, Design and Architecture Department at Monash University and a Naarm-based spatial architect whose work navigates her dreamscapes as an oneironaut. Wagner is passionate about the invert tool as a metaphor and uses these metaphors within editing programs to combine her interdisciplinary skills to create moving images. Her practice takes an auto-ethnographic approach and encompasses her felt eco-angst through dream, time and our internal landscape to create new spatial realities.
Aotearoa-born, Naarm Melbourne-based artist Jen Valender works with moving image and performance to express her interest in ethics and coexistence. Grounded in the cinematic, Valender's practice is inspired by material and historical conditions, conceptual paradoxes, poetic problematics and a resolute blurring of the art/life dichotomy. Valender has exhibited in galleries and public spaces in Australia, France, South Africa and Portugal. She holds an MFA (Research) with first-class honours from the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne.
The conversation series will be catered with light refreshments and food included.
