Description

Join us at Fig and Walnut Café to learn how to growing mushrooms in a bag using coffee grinds! Not only will we learn about mushrooms, but you can also enjoy a coffee and a meal prepared using the mushrooms grown by the café.

Session will include: Presentation on mushroom life cycle and basic info, how mushrooms are used for food around the world, some interesting facts, options of growing mushrooms at home, how to grow mushroom on used up coffee and a demonstration on how to make the mushroom mix.

Fig and Walnut Café is very committed to sustainable practices and waste minimisation. Any excess food is composted on site and spent coffee grounds are used to grow mushrooms.

Meal to be pre-ordered and paid for. Grow your own mushrooms starter kits available to purchase online or at event.

MushiMushi, is a Premiers Design Award finalist for their world’s first zero waste mushroom kit which intercepts valuable resource like coffee grounds from going into landfill to producing chemical free food. After the kit produces mushrooms, the entire kit content including the growing medium and packaging can be composted at home. The idea behind the MushiMushi project is to demonstrate how a valuable resource like spent coffee grounds, is ‘mistaken’ for a waste. Each bag recycles spent grounds from 35 shots of coffee.

Fig and Walnut Cafe is opposite Seddon Train Station. If you'd like to ride to the event, follow our Maribyrnong Travelsmart map.
