Event description

Description

Who is made to feel welcome to our town? Is the Riverina district a safe place where seasonal guest workers and new migrants to the area are treated well?

We would like to extend you an invitation to join a community conversation. The topic of this forum is about perceptions and the reality of migrant workers engaged in the agricultural sector - a vital part of our local economy.

This event is scheduled to support the Federal Government's consideration of a Modern Slavery Act for Australia.

Proposed legislation would see a focus on the conditions of workers at the bottom of supply chains, wage exploitation and slavery-like practices in the agricultural sector, particularly for migrants and backpackers.

Many people, from local residents to business owners through day-to-day activities may encounter victims of criminal exploitation and uncover activities linked to modern slavery crimes.

For instance, housing officers may come across potential victims living in substandard accommodation when inspecting houses and councillors may hear concerns from residents about particular businesses or houses in their area.

It is therefore crucial that more people are aware of how we can all play a role in addressing modern slavery. Conditions in industries with high rates of mistreatment and exploitation have been identified as agriculture, construction, hospitality and cleaning.

At the community forum we plan to cover:

1) Human trafficking, forced labour and modern slavery crimes in Australian law;

2) Key indicators of human trafficking, forced labour and slavery;

3) Australia's legal and social response to slavery;

4) Actions you can take in your community to raise awareness, refer and support victims and prevent slavery through social inclusion, advocacy and organising;

Your assistance to help raise awareness about how to identify and respond to human trafficking, criminal exploitation and forced labour would be greatly appreciated.

All welcome and please pass this invitation onto people who may also be interested in this issue.
