Event description

Description

A comprehensive introduction to greeting and guiding people who are Blind or have low vision. This course teaches “human guide technique”, an orientation and mobility strategy that gives participants the skills and confidence to approach people who may need assistance and offer that assistance respectfully and efficiently.

Following a theoretical discussion, participants practice guiding in pairs under simulated vision loss conditions. We then debrief on the experience, and explore some easy wins in terms of venue accessibility, and run a “You Can’t Ask That” style Q+A with participants to build their knowledge of the lived experience of Blindness and low vision.

Capacity: Up to 12 participants.

Ideal for:

  • Front-line venue staff & their managers/coordinators.

  • Arts & cultural staff from Local Government.

  • Facilities & assets managers.

  • Producers, curators, and experience designers.

  • Teaching artists and trainers.

Learning outcomes:

  • An understanding of Blindness and the spectrum of low vision.

  • An awareness of the Social Model of Disability.

  • An understanding of the theoretical basis for Human Guide Technique.

  • A practical knowledge of how to approach & offer assistance to people who are Blind or have low vision.

  • A knowledge of easy access wins for venues.
