- Wagata-Bon (Tray) Making-

$350 (includes 3 meals)

What is Wagata Bon?

Wagata Bon

Wagata-bon Trays (or Tasuke-bon) have a distinct style and were typically made of chestnut wood that was abundant around Wagatani in Ishikawa on the northern Japanese Sea side of Japan. Wagatani village dissappeared under a dam in 1965 and the tradition of Wagata-bon making was lost since. The tray's rim and base are carved out of a single piece of un-dried wood and is finished with vertical chisel grooves.

This style of tray appears to have been made by several woodworkers in the village and they came in various sizes that depended on what scrap materials were available for use at the time. Very few of the original trays have been found outside the vicinity of Wagatani, and this suggests that they may have been locally bartered for food and daily necessities by the woodworkers.

Shinichi Moriguchi has been in the heart of reviving this once lost tray making tradition. He has been making the and teaching Wagata-bon making to pass on the tradition to others in Japan.

Hiroshi learnt Wagata-bon making in 2017 in Japan from Shinichi Moriguchi. Hiroshi is teaching this style of tray making in Australia, to connect with other chestnut projects conducted at the Sassafras Nuts farm.

Why have the tray making at the chestnut farm?

This program is to give you a whole chestnut experience. You will experience how craft and a tree can connect with people's lives.

While making a tray from chestnut, you will be able to hear the chestnut trees moving in the wind and hear stories of farming chestnuts and of chestnut craft in other countries while eating and drinking chestnut products. This is sure to be a memorable and special couple of days and a night.

Family friendly

You can share the tray making experience with family members.

Minimum age to participate independently in the tray making program will be 12 years old.

Kids under 11 years old can participate in a parent's project under their parent's guidance - staff assistance will be provided.

Kid's program available

We will prepare a separate kid's program to look after kids. (minimum age for the kid's program will be 7 years old.) Maximum 5 to 6 kids.

Sorry but we cannot look after kids under 7 years old - you are welcome to bring a family member/carer to look after your under aged kids who cannot attend the kid's program.

BYO Tent, sleeping bags, warm and wet weater clothing, eating and drinking utensils, camp chairs.

It takes approximately 2 hours from oaks Estate to Sassafras.

Hiroshi Yamaguchi (KOITOYA Design/Make/Teach)

23 years of experience in wood working and teaching. Hiroshi learnt Japanese woodworking in Takayama, Japan & Wagata bon making under Shinichi Moriguchi in 2017.



  1. Making Japanese traditional style tray, Wagata-bon
  2. Discussion of various stories story related to chestnuts.

The program includes the following:

  1. Materials and tuition to make a small to middle size tray - made by yourself by hand
  2. Knowledge and hands-on experience using Japanese round chisel
  3. Knowledge about Wagata-bon and chestnut related crafts
  4. Enjoy the environment of chestnut farm
  5. Enjoy a night with oven cooked pizza and stories about chestnut
  6. 3 meals (Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, Sunday lunch) included in the price - Bring your own lunch for Saturday


Day 1

AM: Picking the timber and splitting the logs

Lunch: BYO lunch

PM: Roughing out the bottom of the tray using round chisels

Evening: Dinner - home made pizza supplied.

Night: BYO tent, sleeping bag, eating and drinking utensils, camp chairs, warm clothing

Day 2

Breakfast: Cereal and toast supplied.

AM: Finishing the bottom of the tray using round chisels

Lunch: Cold lunch supplied.

PM: Finishing the side of the tray using round chisels, and final finishing


Dinner: Hand made wood fired pizza

Breakfast: Toast & Cereal

Lunch(2nd day): Cold lunch; Sandwiches include cold meat, chease and salad.

* BYO lunch for the first day.

Tray making (Inc. 3 meals): $350

Kid's program (inc. 3 meals): $80

Food only, for adult not paticipating in tray making (for 3 meals): $50

Food only, for kids aged under 7 years old: $25

Deposit of $100 required per tray maker.

(for example: 2 tray makers in a family perticipation - book deposit for 2 tickets)

Balance of $250 will be required and billed on 1 Oct

Cancellation Policy

0-6 days: 20% cancellation fee if position is not filled.
