Brisbane City Council’s presents the Green Heart SchoolsTeacher Professional Development Day, showcasing the range of science and sustainability learning programs available to engage and inspire student learning.

Attendees will hear from keynote speaker, Richard Louv, internationally acclaimed author of ‘Last Child In The Woods’, and take part in innovative workshops that bring learning to life outside the classroom and connect global issues to the local level. The program will also feature student leadership opportunities available through Council, where young people are supported by industry professionals to make positive change in their communities.

Attendees will nominate to participate in three (3) hands-on workshops, including a visit to the Planetarium Cosmic Skydome.

Workshops:

  • Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium (for Primary and High School): All attendees will enjoy an exclusive look at the Planetarium, experiencing the Cosmic Skydome first hand to understand Earth’s fragile nature.
  • Active School Travel (for Primary School): From bikes, to scooters, to walking, Council’s award winning Active School Travel program is the way to go to improve student health, protect the environment and reduce congestion at the school gate.
  • Waste Education (for Primary and High School): Learn about the types of school waste management techniques and the benefits of engaging your community.
  • Green Heart Schools Student Environmental Leadership Network (for High School): Explore the psychology of environmental behaviour change for student-led community transformation.
  • Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens (for Primary and High School): Participate in practical science, geography or senior biology (classification) based outdoor activities which provide real world experiences to support your curriculum objectives.
  • Environment Centres (for Primary and High School): Participate in environmental science activities and discover the importance of collecting water quality data and preserving natural habitats in schools.
  • Youth Development Team (for High School): Teachers will walk in the shoes of their students to plan and pitch a project to the Lord Mayor's Youth Advisory Council - LMYAC style.
