3-hour workshop for GPs - Module 3

This 3-hour workshop is the third and last in a series of 3 workshops aimed at up-skilling GPs in the diagnosis of BPD, as well as managing crises with patients, developing treatment and crisis plans and understanding referall pathways. The workshops will provide Registered GPs with the opportunity to discuss the challenges they encounter in organising appropriate care for their patients.

Presenters

Associate Professor Sathya Rao is a specialist psychiatrist in personality disorders and a DBT psychotherapist. He is the Director of Spectrum, clinical centre of excellence for personality disorders. He is the vice president of the Australian BPD Foundation. He is a keen teacher and was previously the Director of Training and head of psychiatry training for RANZCP, Victoria. Sathya is an adjunct clinical associate professor at Monash University. He was a member of the NHMRC clinical practice guidelines development committee for management of borderline personality disorders. He is involved in research and has published widely in the field of personality disorders.

Dr Penny Speed is a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist currently employed at Eastern Health AMHS. Dr Speed gained her medical degree at Monash University in 1987 and then initially trained as a GP in Victoria and New South Wales. She subsequently worked in psychiatry posts in England which lead to her training as a Psychiatrist in Victoria on her return to Australia. Dr Speed initially working at NEMPs (one of the old psychiatric institutions) and then across a number of different hospitals including the Austin, Bendigo Psychiatric hospital, the Mercy and then Maroondah Hospital. Since receiving her fellowship into the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 1998, Dr Speed has worked in public psychiatry at both Eastern and Monash Health services. Her interest has always been in community psychiatry, particularly rehabilitation, and she currently works across a Community Care Unit (CCU) and a Prevention and Recovery centre (PARC).

Dr Speed brings a holistic approach to psychiatry with an interest in understanding her patients’ predicament. She has a particular interest in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder. Dr Speed has also been involved in training registrars and enjoys teaching and sharing knowledge.
