About this event

Join the Friends of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park on a tag-a-long driving tour to visit some of the most significant geological sites in the park, the Golden Spike and Acraman Ejecta.

Golden spike – Across the globe, there’s a series of geological reference points that mark the starting point of a geological age. These locations are referred to as “Golden Spikes”. The Flinders Ranges is home to the southern hemisphere’s only Golden Spike, marking the start of the Ediacaran Period (540 – 635 million years ago).

Acraman Ejecta – Some 590 million years ago, geologists estimate a massive asteroid slammed into South Australia in the Gawler Ranges, over 300km west of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. The impact led to ejecta (debris) to enter the atmosphere before falling back on the ground. Ejecta from the impact is evident within Ediacaran rocks within the Flinders Ranges.
