Event description

Description

Join author of Picture Shows in the Marrickville and Newtown Districts 1898-2012 Robert Parkinson as he gives a talk on a selection of the Cinemas and Theatres in the Inner West.

Moving pictures were first screened in Newtown in 1898. They were a sensation and attracted large audiences. Screenings took place in pre-existing halls, then in open-air 'picture gardens' and finally in enclosed theatres built especially for the medium. These movie theatres copies the design and features of legitimate theatres and came to be known as 'picture palaces' and later as cinemas. Robert Parkinson will give an overview of this development and the public's involvement.
