Event description

Description

With good unit tests comes good code. That’s why we will spend our next Tech Talk discussing our tips and tricks on how to write unit tests that are robust and easier to maintain. We will go through the proper structure and good qualities of well written unit tests, discuss common pitfalls (that we all have seen) and ways to avoid these, but most of all we will give you examples both of good practice and signs of smelly tests.

Many developers struggle with the maintainability of unit tests. We have all experienced unit tests starting to fail for no good reason as well as removing a bunch of tests when refactoring the code, because it was too cumbersome to fix these. We have all heard the complaint that unit tests take too much time to write, which is usually a sign of poor code. Writing good unit tests is hard, and as in many parts of life, skill comes with experience.

In addition to the presentation, we will have a workshop in order to test the power of TDD. For this you need your laptop prepared with your favorite IDE, programming language and test framework. Make sure you have prepared an empty project so that you do not need to waste time setting these up.

This evening is a unique opportunity to get hands on practice how to write maintainable unit tests. To make the most of this session, you should have some experience in writing unit tests. The examples in presentation are written in Java but they are easy enough for all with any programming experience.

Guiding you through the evening is Marika Engström, a senior developer at Go See Talents with more than 15 years experience in writing unit tests.
