Australia-ASEAN Youth Forum (AAYF)

The Australia-ASEAN Youth Forum is a full-day interactive simulation designed to deepen students’ understanding of the Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Australia’s place in the world.

In this active learner-centred program, students are asked to simulate a meeting between the leaders of Australia and the Member States of ASEAN (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia).

Throughout the day they will represent one country and have the opportunity to present that country’s position on the issues they, as nations, are facing. Importantly, they will discuss and propose agreements with the aim to reach mutually agreeable solutions through negotiation and consensus building.

For the purpose of the forum, students will focus on three key regional issues, namely refugees, trade and climate change.

Enabling students to apply their knowledge and skills to solve problems in real-world situations is an essential step in building their capacities to be active and informed global citizens.

From the initial preparation to the actual simulation, students will use and develop general capabilities, including:

  • Literacy through listening, reading, writing and speaking;
  • ICT capability through research, communication and presenting information;
  • Critical and creative thinking to evaluate knowledge and solve problems; and
  • Personal and social capability through working in teams and building positive relationships with other students.

Students will also use and develop skills, knowledge and understanding across Civics and Citizenship, History, Geography, Business and Economics.

Global Goals Youth Forum (GGYF)

The Global Goals Youth Forum is a new full-day program for Year 9 and 10 students, designed to deepen their understanding of global issues as well as Australias place in the world.

Students will research and discuss the United Nations (UN) recently adopted Global Goals for Sustainable Development and propose innovative solutions to achieve positive global change. Areas of focus include ideas to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.

The UN Global Goals Youth Forum aims to inspire young Australians to take an active role in working toward sustainable development. It provides a platform for students to think about and share their ideas to solve the global challenges that will most affect them into the future.

In the lead up to the day, teachers will be provided with materials to guide research into the background and relevant targets for key UN goals. Throughout the day, students will have the opportunity to hear from and interact with expert speakers on each topic to further build their knowledge and understanding.

Students will then collaborate and present their 'Big Idea' to realise one of the goals, discuss and debate some of the key challenges facing the international community and the role of youth in addressing them. They will also make recommendations to the government on how Australia and young Australians specifically, can help implement a sustainable development agenda.

Open a Door to the World (OAD)

These half or full day events give students the opportunity to take part in a range of interactive activities with Go Global Ambassadors, university students and academics that explore how engaging with Asia can open doors beyond school. Go Global Ambassadors are highly-skilled professionals with global careers operating in a broad range of sectors and industries, who can also undertake School visits and host Workplace visits.

AEF has been delivering Open a door to the world events in partnership with universities for the past five years. Reaching thousands of students from across Australia, they have provided a fantastic opportunity for students to reflect on their personal and career goals. They also highlight the range of opportunities available to those who possess language skills, intercultural capability and a sound knowledge and understanding of our region.

Based on the success of this program, the AEF is now opening up the opportunity for secondary schools to host events which can be run in partnership with their network, and tailored to specific industries and learning areas. These events are targeted at students in Year 8 and above – the point at which students begin to make important decisions regarding subjects for their final years of school life.
