Global connections: perspectives on international migration in Sydney and A...
Event Information
Event description
Description
International migration has been a driving force in Australia's population growth since the turn of the millennium. At it's peak in 2007/08, Australia received a net intake of nearly 300,000 international migrants per year. While net overseas migration (NOM) levels have since fallen back to trend levels, new projections suggest that NOM will again be the dominant driver of population growth into the future.
We encourage you to come along to the first Sydney APA Seminar of 2014 to hear from two eminent Australian Demographers:
- Professor Graeme Hugo AO is an ARC Australian Professorial Fellow, Professor of Geography and Director of the Australian Population and Migration Research Centre at the University of Adelaide. He is the author of over three hundred books, articles in scholarly journals and chapters in books. In 2012 he was named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to population research, particularly the study of international migration. Professor Hugo will discuss the importance of NOM to Australia's population growth, recent trends and future prospects.
- Dr Alison Taylor is the Chief Demographer at the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure and also the current President of the Australian Population Association (APA). Dr Taylor will cover the significant contribution that overseas migration has made to NSW's recent population growth. Sydney will be a particular focus with the talk covering the numbers and characteristics of recent migrants, as well as their present location. Dr Taylor will also briefly discuss possible future trends in overseas migration to NSW.
Please bring your ticket along with you on the evening of Thursday 27 March. Note - tickets can be scanned from your mobile.
