Giving it your best shot – Trial and terror in life and photography.
Sat. 1 April 2017, 9:30 am – 11:30 am AEST
AWiA members and rural women from around the region are invited to join AWiA for brunch as we host our first event at the Toowoomba Royal Show.
Ticket price includes entry to the show, gourmet breakfast and the opportunity to hear from reknowned photographer, author and rural advocate Fiona Lake.
For almost 30 years Fiona Lake has been dedicated to explaining the life of 'out of sight, out of mind' remote Australian residents, to foster respect, preservation of culture and more equitable government policies.
Fiona's 3 photographic books feature Australia's largest cattle stations and thousands of copies have been mailed worldwide. Many of her photographs have won awards and been widely published. The ABC Landline feature on her work screened eleven times.
Career highlights include being invited to speak at the inaugural Farmers on Film festival in the UK and the first Australian appointed to the three-person judging panel for the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists 'Star Prize for Photography'. Fiona is also one of the few photographers to have had an exhibition opened by the Governor General of Australia (Major General Michael Jeffery, at the Australian Stockmen's Hall of Fame). She is this year's Qld Rural Press Club 'social media' award winner.
Fiona's talk will include examples of her 'trial and terror' entrepreneurial habits; triumphing over obstacles (even if such persistence borders on crazy), the compromises women make and changes she has seen in the bush. It will be illustrated with favourite images taken across Australia over several decades.
