Event description
The Term 3 workshop at the University of Melbourne has been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

About this event

In this workshop we’ll be looking at Markov chains, which are a great introduction to Artificial IntelligenceI! We’ll make a program that can create new sentences based on books, song lyrics or anything you want! This project is very similar to the programming in your phone that tries to suggest the next word you want to write in your text messages, and can be used for all kinds of fun things like writing the next Taylor Swift song or the long awaited “Green Eggs and Ham” sequel!

You don’t need any programming experience to come along, we’ll teach you everything you need to know! We’ll cover all the programming basics and brush up on any Python you already know, and we will have computers ready for you to use at the workshop.

Please note, you must receive a confirmation e-mail before attending a GPN workshop. The confirmation email will be sent once you have completed the registration process.

Also, we always have a long waiting list for GPN, so if you have registered but are no longer able to attend please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your place to another student.

REGISTRATION FAQ

LOCATION

GPN is held in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) Building on Wilson Avenue at the University of Melbourne Parkville Campus. The easiest way to find the building is to enter the campus at Swanston St/Monash Road from Gate 4 which is opposite Tram Stop 1. Follow Monash Road which becomes Wilson Avenue as it bends to the left. Continue along Wilson Avenue and the EEE Building will be on your right just before the pedestrian crossing.

CATERING

A pizza lunch will be provided, together with fruit, chocolate and lollies! You can nominate dietary restrictions in your registration. We can accommodate vegetarian, dairy-free and gluten-free. Students with additional dietary requirements will need to self-cater. Note that most on-campus food outlets will not be open on a Saturday so please bring a packed lunch that does not require refrigeration.

MEDIA CONSENT FORM

We like to put a few pictures from workshop up on our website. To do this, we need your parents to sign a media consent form. It's fine if you don't want pictures taken, just let us know! The form will be emailed to you - please bring a printed and signed copy on the day, or email the soft copy to us.

TICKET

You do not need to bring a printed ticket on the day, just bring yourself!

COVID-19

The event organisers have taken extensive measures to ensure a COVIDSafe event in conjunction with the University's COVIDSafe Plan. There will be enhanced infection control and cleaning measures in place across all of our campuses to ensure we are creating the safest environment and continuing to prioritise the health and safety for all of our staff, students and the local community. For more information, refer to the University’s COVID-19 response page: https://www.unimelb.edu.au/coronavirus.
