Description

girledworld WOW Summit University of Sydney

A TRANSFORMATIONAL EVENT FOR TEENAGE GIRLS brought to you by girledworld and the University of Sydney!

BUILD 21ST CENTURY EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS, PROBLEM SOLVE IN CHALLENGE TEAMS, MEET AMAZING GLOBAL CAREER MENTORS + GET SET TO THRIVE IN THE FUTURE OF WORK!

In a rapidly changing technological world, girledworld know we need to equip the next generation of girls with the future skillsets, entrepreneurial mindsets and practical techsets they need to lead, succeed and thrive in their future careers.

The education system is doing what it can to keep up with this pace of change but we need more real-world, industry-aligned learning and female role models so that young people can navigate ever more complex careers in the shifting world economy, and build the critical 21st enterprise skills they’ll need to become our country’s job creators, not just job seekers.

After the huge success of the 2017 and 2018 girledworld Summits at The University of Melbourne and RMIT University Melbourne, supported by both the Australian Federal and Victorian State governments, the girledworld WOW 'World of Work' Summit 2019 will ignite the University of Sydney for two transformational days of future facing, goal setting and career planning for girls (Year 7-Year 12) on Friday February 15 and Saturday February 16 2019. (Please note the girledworld WOW Summit Saturday is now SOLD OUT. Tickets for Friday February 15 are still available).

The University of Sydney girledworld WOW Summit 2019 will bring together top global speakers (keynotes and virtual) from some of the world's biggest companies and social mission organisations (Twitter, Airbnb, Atlassian, Microsoft, Virgin Australia, 1 Million Women, Foundation for Young Australians, NSW Parliament, SheFlies, PwC, UniSuper) plus Australian industry experts and outstanding career mentors to help girls explore the new world of work and how to plan their future career pathways in the leadership, entrepreneurship, emerging technology and STEM sectors. Critically, speakers will unpack the real skills they use every day so girls can start to understand foundational future of work toolkits, and begin to build them now to ensure future tertiary pathways, internship opportunities and career employability.

The girledworld NSW WOW Summit delivered in partnership with the University of Sydney will connect hundreds of Australian high school girls with the leaders of today to give them the skills, knowledge and confidence they’ll need to make informed choices about their future career pathways. Watch the event video and read more here.

This event is aligned to the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities, Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies learning areas, and recognises the importance of the development of disciplinary knowledge, real world enterprise skills (critical thinking, problem solving and Design Thinking) and general cross-curriculum capabilities in young people (See below).

girledworld WOW Summit 2019 streams include World Shaping (Mindsets), Future Facing (Techsets) and Work Ready (Skillsets) and will be delivered at the University of Sydney campus across two jam-packed days of interactive learning, problem solving, leadership cultivation, industry mentorship and entrepreneurial skill-building.

All participants will receive a Certificate of Critical Thinking, and participants in the Friday Industry Challenge Day will receive a Certificate of Design Thinking to add to their resumes. Participants will also receive first access to the World of Work Careers platform being developed by the founders of girledworld and scheduled for beta release in 2019. Read more on our website here.

Please note attending students do not need to be accompanied by teachers/adults. This event is supervised, and staffed by girledworld team and volunteers from the University of Sydney and our industry partner organisations.

World Shaping, Future Facing, Work Ready

Saturday (Day 2) will see hundreds of high school girls (currently in Year 7 to Year 12) exposed to a powerful network of inspiring female industry leaders, STEM champions, media superstars and career role models across a massive day of World Shaping, Future Facing and Work Ready career education keynotes, interactive presentations and skill-building teamwork sessions.

This certainly isn’t your average career conference.

This is an event especially designed to engage girls at their level, so they can better shape their future pathways. Through our work with universities, best practice education research and our engagement with thousands of secondary school girls across Australia we know that career decision making and school subject choices can be highly confusing and a roller coaster in the upper years of high school.

So the girledworld WOW Summit 2019 program has been curated and designed just for Australian secondary school girls, empowering, educating and equipping them to make informed decisions about their individual career pathways with the new World Of Work front of mind.

This is great way for secondary school girls to meet and learn from inspiring female role models who “tell it like it is”, open the door to emerging industries, uncover the job opportunities of tomorrow, and start girls goal setting and planning for their future career pathways now!

Australian Curriculum

In the Australian Curriculum, capability encompasses knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions. Students develop capability when they apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in complex and changing circumstances, in their learning at school and in their lives outside school.

The Australian Curriculum is designed to help all young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. Presented as a developmental sequence of learning from Foundation - Year 10, the Australian Curriculum describes to teachers, parents, students and others in the wider community what is to be taught and the quality of learning expected of young people as they progress through school, and into their tertiary pathways and future careers beyond.

The three-dimensional design of the Foundation – Year 10 Australian Curriculum recognises the importance of disciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding alongside general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities, and the girledworld WOW Summit at the University of Sydney is aligned to key learning areas across these three dimensions to ensure all attendees:

1. Develop transferrable Enterprise Skillsets and Capabilities to gain employability value

2. Work with traditional, contemporary and emerging technologies that shape the world in which we live, and will increasingly define the future World of Work

3. Develop understandings and capabilties in creating solutions through complex problem solving

4. Explore sustainable patterns of living for themselves and others

5. Engage with and respond to the designed world, and understand how to goal set and design for impact

6. Educate, explore and equip themselves with understandings of the STEM workforce, career pathways and critical skills needed to enage in this sector

In particular, the girledworld WOW Summit 2018 will align to the Australian Curriculum: Technologies (as adopted by each state) which draws together the distinct but related subjects of Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies.

In the Australian Curriculum, capability encompasses knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions. Students develop capability when they apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in complex and changing circumstances, in their learning at school and in their lives outside school.
