Event description

Learn to skill-build, problem solve and thrive in the future of work.

In an exponentially changing, increasingly technological and complex world, we need to equip the next generation of girls with the skillsets, mindsets and techsets they’ll need to lead, succeed and thrive in the future of work.

The education system is doing what it can to keep up with this pace of change, but we need more real-world, industry-aligned learning too so that young people can navigate ever more complex careers in the shifting world economy, and build the enterprise skills they’ll need to become our country’s job creators, not just job seekers.

After the huge success of the 2017 girledworld Summit at the University of Melbourne supported by the Australian Federal and Victorian State governments, this year’s girledworld WOW 'World of Work' Summit 2018 will ignite Melbourne’s RMIT University for one very big, transformational weekend of future facing, goal setting and career planning for girls (Years 9 - 12) on Saturday June 16 and Sunday June 17, 2018.

This year’s WOW Summit will bring together top speakers, industry experts and career mentors to explore the new world of work, future cities, emerging technologies and enterprise skill-building in education, and will connect Australian secondary school girls with the leaders of today and tomorrow to give them the skills, knowledge and confidence they’ll need to make informed choices about their future career pathways.

This event is aligned to the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities, Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies learning areas, and recognises the importance of the development of disciplinary knowledge, real world enteprise skills (critical thinking, problem solving and Design Thinking) and general cross-curriculum capabilities in young people (See below).

girledworld WOW Summit 2018 streams include World Shaping (Mindsets), Future Facing (Techsets) and Work Ready (Skillsets) and will be delivered at RMIT’s Melbourne city campus across two jam-packed days of interactive learning, problem solving, leadership cultivation, industry mentorship and entrepreneurship skill-building.

This event is not only for students! Empowering a generation requires a whole ecosystem, so we welcome students to attend with their parents/guardians and invite teachers and educators to join us across the weekend.

All participants will receive a Certificate of Critical Thinking, and Sunday participants will receive a Micro-Credential in Design Thinking.

girledworld Summit 2018 Day 1 RMIT
DAY 1: girledworld WOW Summit 2018
Saturday June 16, 2018 9.00am-5.30pm
World Shaping, Future Facing, Work Ready

We’ve taken everything you loved from the sell-out girledworld Big Ideas 2017 Summit (University of Melbourne) and gone to the next level for the opening day of the girledworld WOW (World of Work) Summit 2018 at RMIT.

Saturday (Day 1) will see hundreds of high school girls (currently in Years 9 to 12) exposed to a powerful network of inspiring female industry leaders, STEM champions and career role models across a massive day of World Shaping, Future Facing and Work Ready career education keynotes, presentations and skill-building interactive sessions.

This isn’t your average career conference.

We know career decision making and planning can be highly confusing and a roller coaster in the upper years of high school.

So the girledworld WOW Summit has been curated and designed just for Australian secondary school girls, empowering, educating and equipping them to make informed decisions about their individual career pathways with the new World Of Work front of mind.

This is great way for secondary school girls to meet and learn from inspiring female role models who “tell it like it is”, open the door to emerging industries, uncover the job opportunities of tomorrow, and start girls goal setting and planning for their future career pathways now!

Australian Curriculum

The Australian Curriculum is designed to help all young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. Presented as a developmental sequence of learning from Foundation - Year 10, the Australian Curriculum describes to teachers, parents, students and others in the wider community what is to be taught and the quality of learning expected of young people as they progress through school, and into their tertiary pathways and future careers beyond.

The three-dimensional design of the Foundation – Year 10 Australian Curriculum recognises the importance of disciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding alongside general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities, and this year's girledworld WOW Summit is aligned to key learning areas across these three dimensions to ensure all attendees:
1. Develop transferrable Enterprise Skillsets and Capabilities to gain employability value
2. Work with traditional, contemporary and emerging technologies that shape the world in which we live, and will increasingly define the future World of Work
3. Develop understandings and capabilties in creating solutions through complex problem solving
4. Explore sustainable patterns of living for themselves and others
5. Engage with and respond to the designed world, and understand how to goal set and design for impact
6. Educate, explore and equip themselves with understandings of the STEM workforce, career pathways and critical skills needed to enage in this sector

In particular, the girledworld WOW Summit 2018 will align to the Australian Curriculum: Technologies (as adopted by each state) which draws together the distinct but related subjects of Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies.

In the Australian Curriculum, capability encompasses knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions. Students develop capability when they apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in complex and changing circumstances, in their learning at school and in their lives outside school.
