Overview

Why good work stalls in local government, and what actually helps it move in complex systems.

Getting Traction in Local Government

In local government, progress is rarely blocked by a lack of effort or good intent. More often, work stalls because influence is applied at the wrong time, framed in the wrong way, or carried by too few people.

This free workshop explores how work actually moves in complex local government systems. It introduces three interconnected levers for getting traction, focusing on framing, timing, and coalition, and how these can be applied ethically and practically in day-to-day work.

Participants will be encouraged to reflect on a real piece of work they are currently trying to progress and consider how these levers could be used more deliberately.

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Better understand why good work often stalls in local government systems
  • Learn three practical levers for getting traction in complex organisational and political environments
  • Be able to apply these ideas to a real piece of work they are currently trying to progress

Who should attend?

This session is designed for local government staff at all levels who are responsible for progressing work in complex environments.

It will be particularly relevant for officers, coordinators, managers, and team leaders who are working across multiple stakeholders, governance processes, and competing priorities.

Session is capped at 100 participants
