Event description

Description

This year the GERRIC Parent Courses are running at the same time as our student programs, and are timed so that you can drop-off/pick-up your child with ease before and after the session. Learn more about how your child ticks while they expand their horizons!

Book in to the two day beginners, one day specialised course, or all three days with our different ticket options.

Beginners Course

Dates: 17&18 July
Time: 9am-3pm

Parents of gifted children are in a unique situation. Often, the advanced development of the abilities of a gifted child outpaces the child’s physical or emotional development, resulting in frustration for both parent and child. It is common for parents of gifted children to feel confused about the educational needs of their gifted child, and GERRIC’s parent programming aims to address these concerns and challenges. Our parent workshops provide an opportunity for parents to develop a greater understanding of their gifted child’s needs, to interact with other parents of gifted children and to learn from current research and experts in the field of gifted education.

Advanced Course
Date: 19 July
Time: 9am-2.30pm

This day will cover two topics in greater depth.

SESSION 1:

Moral reasoning, empathy and giftedness: The melding of heart and mind

Focus on the cognitive attributes of a gifted child can be counter-productive. Understanding how gifted children are different socially and emotionally, can help us to support the whole child. Research demonstrates that gifted children respond differently to moral dilemmas and self-reported empathy surveys, than their chronological age peers. This session will explore these differences, and the implications of these differences for parents and schools. The session will also unpack some strategies to nurture moral development and empathy.

SESSION 2:

Parent Advocacy: Working together to achieve success

Parents know their child intimately and want what is best for them. Working with schools is critical to achieving success for gifted children. This session will provide a plan for how to ensure interaction with schools is fruitful and positive.
