Event description

Description

Join Geraldine Doogue and an expert panel on Thursday 30 August to discuss 'Australia-China: a complicated friendship'.

Relations with China sit at the top of Australia's foreign policy agenda. China is our biggest trading partner and we claim privileged status as one of only a handful of countries to have secured an annual round of formal leaders discussions with China. Yet the relationship has been strained by concerns on the Australian side about Chinese investment and influence here and Chinese anger over Australia’s foreign interference laws, among other issues. These tensions have been reflected in a divisive debate among specialists commentators.

So where to from here?

Join:

  • Clive Hamilton, Professor of Public Ethics, Charles Sturt University, Canberra

  • Richard McGregor, Senior Fellow for East Asia, Lowy Institute

  • Jason Yat-Sen Li, Chairman of Vantage Asia Holdings

  • Jocelyn Chey, Former Consul-General for Australia in Hong Kong and the founding Director of the Australia-China Institute for Arts and Culture, Western Sydney University.

This panel discussion will be recorded for radio to be played on Big Ideas.
