George Bass Desal 18km Coastal Hike

About this Event

Welcome to the beautiful George Bass Desal Walk...

It is located in the lovely town of Wonthaggi which was originally settled as a dairy farming and mining town supplying black coal to Melbourne, and now with the construction of the desal plant and wind farm it again is meeting essential needs for Melbourne.

This walk covers everything.. wind power, water power, open ocean spaces, tea tree bush and tall gums. It is an easy walking track which will lead you through a variety of environments. If you’d like a quick snack to eat, the specifically designed bird hid is a great place for a quick stop to take in the serenity.

Then off to the river, for more bird watching …. keep your eyes out for echidnas and emus and of course the odd slithery friends!

Enjoy the beautiful open ocean, and a quick chat with local fisherman before heading off the beach to the majestic wind turbines. We will visit the stunning Williamson’s beach.

On the way back count the kangaroos and again look for the flock of emus!

On return enjoy the view from the viewing platform over the beautiful Wonthaggi farmland.

If your staying the weekend, check out the Wonthaggi state coal mine, the heathlands, and the great cafes in Wonthaggi.
