Event description

Description

During World War II and decade after it, the Ukrainian nationalist resistance fought for an independent Ukraine, against the Soviet rule, Nazi invasion, and Polish and Czechoslovak forces and other perceived enemies of Ukrainian people. Consisting of several different groups, most notably the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (Orhanizatsiia Ukrains’kykh Natsionalistiv, OUN) and Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukrains’ka Povstans’ka armiia, UPA), they utilized guerrilla tactics, political violence, propagandist activity, and infiltration of political parties, groups, and institutions to achieve their goals.

Dr Marta Havryshko studies the wartime experiences of former members of the Ukrainian nationalist resistance with a focus on the experiences of women in the war context during that time. The role of women at war is closely linked to women's role in society and their role in the family, questions that are of renewed relevance today not only in the current conflict between Ukraine and Russia but also in the wider discussion of gender roles and gender-based violence.

Dr Havryshko is visiting Monash University from the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences in Lviv, in the west of Ukraine. She is one of the recipients of the Ada Booth Research Fellowship and researches the gendered experiences of women during the Second World War in Ukraine. She is also utilising the Library's extensive collections in Ukrainian Studies and the resources in Historical and Gender Studies.

There will be light refreshments at 6.00pm.
