About the speakers:

Dr Melanie Roberts - Flying Scientist

The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is under threat from climate change and poor water quality. Sediments and nutrients originating in gullies travels to the GBR contributing to poor water quality. I develop mathematical models of gully erosion and wetlands to help people decide where to invest, and what actions to take, to reduce erosion and remove nitrogen from waters. My research provides a cost-effective way to know how we can help protect the Reef. While my motivation has been the GBR this research will help prevent gully erosion throughout Qld, Australia and internationally.

Josh Davis - Young Science Ambassador

Josh is currently completing a PhD at QUT conducting research in the field of nonlinear optics. His research focuses on modelling the interaction of laser light with small gold nanoparticles in an effort to control the amount of laser induced heating, and to enhance certain properties. The applications of this research are extremely diverse and range from the creation of better lasers in the ultra-violet region to medical physics and cancer treatment, to non-line of sight communication and the solid state lighting.

The Flying Scientists program engages rural Queenslanders in Science. It is a partnership between the Queensland Office of the Chief Scientist (OQCS) and Wonder of Science. The Flying Scientists are researchers who accompany Wonder of Science Young Science Ambassadors into regional Queensland centres for community Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) engagement events.
