Gathering of Kindness: Kindness Matters - Continuing the Conversation

Thursday, 2 November 2017

Rachel Callander. " Life, Love and Awesomeness " - the impact and implications of language in healthcare"

"After losing her daughter Evie who had a rare chromosome condition Rachel turned her award winning photographic talent to capturing the beauty and abilities of other children with 'Super Powers' - a term coined by Rachel to flip the deficit mentality often reached for when describing disability. Rachel travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand meeting ordinary families being made extraordinary through the journeys their children are taking them on. As a result of her travels, Rachel's insights and images offer a fresh understanding and language regarding disability. The stunning photographs of the children alongside the conversations with their parents are presented in the Super Power Baby Project, an international award winning book. Rachel’s advocacy, following the launch of the Super Power Baby Project, does not shy from the notion that genetic syndromes bring with them their share of challenge, grief and difficulty but provides a strong message that there is much that lies beyond that. Rachel demonstrates that these children have much to teach us about themselves and ourselves, which is to be celebrated as truly exceptional and is making a positive difference in the lives of all who read the book and hear her message; giving hope to families, challenging the deficit mentality and celebrating uniqueness."

Karin Morrison is a renowned educator and author. She challenges us to think differently about how we interact with each other and our patients. We are all under so much pressure with accountability in high stakes contexts in our rapidly changing world, and too often assumptions and judgments are made quickly. Does all this enable you to see beyond the surface and overcome obstacles that constantly arise; provide logical evidence for what is happening and what you are doing? This session will explore strategies to uncover the story behind the story, consider different perspectives and foster open communication and active participation in resolving challenges, developing deeper understanding of others and being the best you can be.
