Aspect Hunter School, which has been operating since 1977, currently enrolls 140 students on the autism spectrum across seven sites. Up until now, Aspect has only offered primary school programs in the Newcastle/Hunter region however, it is high school life that students on the autism spectrum often struggle the most with. In Term 1, 2019 Aspect Hunter School commenced its first high school classes in classrooms next to the current Primary school site at Thornton.

Aspect Hunter School is part of Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) Australia’s leading service provider for people on the autism spectrum. Our specialised, evidence informed schools program is one of the largest in the world, with additional services that include; information and advice, diagnostic assessments, therapy services and support across the life stages. Aspect focuses on delivering services based on what research tell us works. Aspect is also involved in leading and being involved in national and international research projects to develop knowledge and improve practice in the field. Some of our research has focused on the outcomes of adolescents and adults on the autism spectrum. The outcomes are often poor when considering the many strengths, interests and talents of people on the spectrum. Our high school aims to improve these outcomes by;

• Providing an autism specific program which works with the strengths and interests of each student
• Delivering the mainstream syllabus in a way that engages students in learning
• Developing skills and community connections for lifelong benefit
• Successfully transitioning our students to post school life
• Working closely with a student’s family to ensure positive change and progress across school, home and community.
