During this unique session, you will learn how to use methods and theories from the fields of Community Development and Social Innovation to grow 21st century skills in your community.

We will share the unique approach we have taken in supporting the growth of the CoderDojo WA movement to catalyse the growth of computer programming clubs (CoderDojos) throughout Western Australia. This will include case studies of our activity in Geraldton, Karratha and the South West.

Whilst we will be using the case of CoderDojo WA as an example, the approach we developed could be applicable to a range of 21st century or general community learning activities that you are trying to grow in your community or client base. If you are looking for ways to increase resilience and future proof your community then this session is for you.

Who is this session for?

You might work in any of the following fields: education, librarianship, science communication, youth work, community relations, community investment, community development, local government, state government, economic development, philanthropy, social innovation, or other. Or you may be a student looking to progress your learnings.

Depending upon what you are trying to achieve in your community, this session could help you:

• Learn how to build the capability and the capacity of a community so that it can self-support its own sustainable learning activities.
• Broaden your perspective on the communities you work with, and what could be possible.
• Learn how you could become a catalyst for 21st century learning in your community, which may help you in your grant applications or in business development.
• Learn how to become a CoderDojo Catalyst in your community.

Topics we will cover in this session

1. How the world has changed and what skills are needed today.
2. Social Learning Theory; what is it and why is it relevant to your community?
3. Social Capital, why relationships are important and how to support their growth.
4. What is Community Development and how does it relate to 21st century skill development?
5. How you can use Asset Based Community Development to support sustainable learning activities in a community.
6. Why is it important to support resilience in a community and how do you do it?
7. The challenges of replicating social and community initiatives.
8. What is "System Knitting" and how is it done?
9. What mindset is required for this kind of work?
10. What kind of organisational support is required for this kind of work?

No previous knowledge or experience in these areas is necessary.

What is CoderDojo WA?

CoderDojo is an open source education movement, and a worldwide community of fun, free and social coding clubs (Dojos) for 7-17 year olds (Ninjas) which help them develop digital literacy and other 21st century skills.  CoderDojo WA is the Western Australian node of the international CoderDojo movement. CoderDojo WA is led and supported by the Fogarty Foundation, with help from our partners Woodside and Scitech.

What about parking and transport?

Scitech is just across from the City West Train Station. You can park for free under Scitech (City West). Make sure that you get your parking ticket validated by a Scitech staff member so that you can get out of the gate on your departure.

Are you interested in becoming a CoderDojo WA Catalyst?

We are looking to empower more community members to become catalysts for CoderDojo WA in their communities. If you would like to become a catalyst, please select the "Trainee Catalyst" ticket when you book. We highly recommend that you register as a Trainee Trainer for the the CoderDojo WA Champion and Mentor Training in the afternoon (1pm - 3pm) of the same day, as being a Catalyst may involve delivering such training sessions in your community.

Who is running this session?

This session will be run by Karen Wellington with support from Rebecca Loftus.

About Karen: As the Program Manager of CoderDojo WA at the Fogarty Foundation, Karen developed a unique approach that catalysed the establishment of over 100 computer programming clubs, the activation of 130 community leaders and the creation of over 3000 learning opportunities for young people. In 2016 Karen was the recipient of a Social Change Fellowship from the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation for her work activating this community-driven learning network. Karen is an alumni of the University of Western Australia's Social Impact program, completed under scholarship from the National Centre for Social Impact. She is currently studying towards a Masters in Community Development and her current focus areas are networked learning, systems thinking, enabling diversity in technology and innovation in education.

About Rebecca: Rebecca is a high school science teacher by trade. She moved from Ireland to Perth in 2011, completing a Masters in Science and Mathematics teaching at Curtin University. After four years as the head of the science department in a regional school in WA, she enrolled in a PhD in Education at Murdoch University where her research focus is on interdisciplinary curricula and change management in schools. She joined the Fogarty Foundation in 2016 as part of the CoderDojo WA team and has supported the growth of the network in regional WA. In 2017, her focus at the Foundation shifted to a new initiative, EDfutures, which seeks to support schools in implementing innovative change, advocate for institutional change and act as a platform for teacher voice.
