This exciting four day immersive type and lettering retreat with internationally renowned lettering artist Gemma O'Brien offers a rare opportunity for hand crafters of letters (such as sign writers, letterers and calligraphers who already have skills) to discover their own highly marketable nich and take that skill somewhere new and interesting. It is not enough to know how to letter, you need to use your skills to implement unique lettering outcomes that create impact But how?
Meet Gemma O'Brien. O'Brien's success lies in much more than her ability to craft pretty lettering. It stems from her considered experimentation, an awareness of trends, and an understanding of lettering and type as its own powerful language that creates and alters meaning. Both Veronica and Gemma have an intelligent approach to Typography that is thoughtful, playful, and explores many different styles and media and applications. They enjoy working across themes that utilise the power of ideas, words and language, which they like to integrate with finely honed lettering skills (both digital, and traditional hands on). This is a powerful combination of skills that collides to create impact while adding the dimension of authenticity that facilitates successful user experience. Experimentation, fun, and play along with structure and feedback is the key to finding your own style in this four day lettering retreat.
This well structured retreat will deliver mini masterclasses, projects and information sessions, and will help you to implement lettering solutions that while "pretty and soundly crafted", are so much more ! We will help you to utilise clever creative thinking that that activates and influences audience behaviour. You will have the opportunity to tap into the professional experience, knowledge and skills of Gemma O Brien, OSNS Type Lab library of extremely rare Type Specimens, and the Typographic knowledge and professional teaching experience of Veronica Grow who has successfully led many exhibitions and projects. You will also make new friends, and gain creative confidence you need to go our there and kick professional ass !
You will expand your existing skill set by working through a series of projects to explore the creative possibilities afforded by a kit of creative tools and processes, as you developing creative hand crafted typographic themes that are applicable to branding projects, poster design, title design and packaging. Each day, you will work on a new lettering project. You will receive shared and one on one o feedback providing insight into your strengths and weaknesses. You will find new possibilities in your projects, and you will leave with an exciting body of work, and many tips plus the confidence to showcase your work and be noticed. You will also develop a much sharper more critical eye, and greater assurance and efficiency working with hand rendered letterforms.
Each day there will be inspiring mini masterclasses coupled with presentation of case studies, as you learn some new secret tricks and skills, and have the opportunity to explore different materials. A whole week of working and learning makes a huge difference and is alot of fun.

Who this is for
This intensive is not for complete beginners who have never picked up a lettering pen. You will need to have completed a lettering class either at OSNS, with Gemma O Brien, or with any other lettering teachers. This is not a class for people with absolutely no knowledge of either hand lettering or calligraphy.

What you will need to bring.
A graphic design or art back ground is helpful, but not essential.
A love of ideas and words
A3 Detail pad or pad of tracing paper
Coloured gouche (red, yellow, blue, black, and white and any other colours you like)
Any other media that you prefer to work with such as particular brushes, or paints, or substrates.
An open mind and willingness to experiment
