Theory, Practice and Field Demonstrations

Newcastle, 4 March – 8 March 2019

The Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE) has partnered with the Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (GCER), the University of Newcastle (UoN) to deliver our first Australian Summer School on Contaminated Site Assessment, Management and Communication.

This course has been developed especially for individuals who manage, regulate, investigate, remediate, or are impacted by contaminated sites. It provides participants with a unique appreciation of the underpinning science and technology coupled with practical approaches to site characterisation, assessment and remediation as well as risk communication.

Regardless of their current level of expertise, this course will provide participants with enhanced skills, knowledge, networks and confidence to manage even the most challenging sites and help them become leaders in the global remediation industry.

This is an all-inclusive course that draws together new knowledge with practical experience to provide participants with the cutting-edge skills to manage and remediate contaminated sites all around the world. This course has been developed in response to the critical need to build capacity to address the growing global contamination crisis. While technical lessons can be learned through the study of past projects, an advantage of this course will be the semi-structured discussions, problem solving and personal interactions that allow participants to consider the many facets of modern contaminant site assessment and remedial design. The course will also discuss aspects of sustainable low impact remediation approaches, climate change considerations, policy and regulatory matters, and economic considerations – all within a context of gaining and maintaining a social licence to operate.

Expert instruction

In-depth instruction by, and interaction with, leading environmental experts from academia, consulting and government from across Australia and the rest of the world. These experts provide participants with a comprehensive insight into toxicology, engineering geology, hydrogeology and geochemical principles, site assessment procedures, risk management tools, remediation technologies and strategies, and management issues relating to contaminated land and hazardous waste sites.

Qualitative and quantitative risk assessment based on the conceptual site model will be practised and the effect of different legal contexts explored. The role and cost/benefit of modern advanced analytical chemistry (e.g. GCxGC, Time of Flight Mass Spectroscopy, physiologically based bio-accessibility testing, isotope analysis, asbestos fibre release) will be explored.

Participants will receive detailed technical information on the best-available remediation technologies, design and selection criteria, remediation implementation strategies, and field monitoring.

Sessions on computer modelling and data management support software

Participants will be offered optional computer-based evening sessions. These sessions will provide participants with an understanding of how an individual model works, its underpinnings and how to apply it to site-specific scenarios. As a result, participants will develop strong skills in the application and use of leading-edge software to assess, characterise and manage contaminated sites. Models being discussed include:

  • Contaminant groundwater modelling
  • Vapour intrusion modelling
  • Environmental Data Management


Participants will have numerous structured and unstructured networking opportunities to build connections and relationships with national and international leaders in the field and with their fellow participants. These include leaders from academia, industry and government.

Day 1

Introduction to the course: Professor Ravi Naidu

Global perspective on overview of contaminated and hazardous waste site management, challenge and solutions. 

Legal context and policy: key case studies

  • Legislation: new vs historic pollution
  • Change of land use vs ongoing land use
  • Permitted operations – lessons from around the world

Environmental chemistry

  • Soil chemistry of hazardous materials
  • Sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fate of chemical species in the air, soil, and water environments
  • Environmental and health risks of anthropogenic contaminants
  • Sampling, analysis and quality planning: soil, sediment, groundwater, and soil gas
  • Field data quality control
  • Case examples

Site assessment 

  • A detailed overview of Contaminated and Hazardous Waste Site Management
  • Environmental Law Applicable to Contaminated Sites
  • Environmental Chemistry and Geology Made Easy for Site Investigation & Remediation
  • Biological, Physical and Chemical Processes
  • Environmental Forensics and Analytical Chemistry including
    • Dealing with laboratory analysis
    • Laboratory analytical method used for each chemical of concern
    • Laboratory subsample the samples in particular for samples collected in the saturated zone with LNAPL present
    • Should samples be mixed by the laboratory before subsampling pros and cons
    • Detection limits and how should the percentage recovery of standards be used in risk assessment
    • Balancing studies: chemistry, geology or toxicology for non-specialists

Day 2

Site characterisation and conceptual site model development

  • Soil, Sediment, Groundwater and Soil Gas Characterization Tools and Techniques
  • Contaminant migration, potential receptors of concern and exposure pathways
  • Source identification
  • Case examples

Sampling and Monitoring of soil, groundwater, and soil gas 

  • Principles of contaminant hydrogeology
  • Practical model applications for fate and transport modelling, risk assessment and site remediation
  • Vapour intrusion modelling
  • Environmental data management

Selection of sampling strategies for large sites where there is debate whether grid or targeted sampling strategy is the best way to go; how the sampling strategy affects risk assessment is often not considered up front but it should be.

  • Soil and Sediment sampling presents challenges for example integrated vs interval sampling
  • Groundwater sampling issues – purge vs no purge; accounting for seasonal influences especially where groundwater experiences large fluctuations in level within an annual cycle; where should monitoring well screen be located, which drilling method should be used.
  • Vapour sampling – seasonal impacts of changes in moisture content of the soil, sampling under buildings.

Data analyses including how to compare site data against assessment criteria?

  • Should depth samples be averaged?
  • Should each data point be compared against assessment criteria, or means, medians, non-parametric methods for aggregating data?

Participants in this course will become familiar with the application of environmental decision support software, and groundwater and risk assessment modelling tool and optimizing groundwater remediation systems.

Day 3

Human health and ecological risk assessment 

  • Integrate national and international concepts, principles and methodologies to critically evaluate environmental hazards
  • basic process and fundamental steps involved in conducting a health risk assessment
  • Qualitative and quantitative risk assessment
  • Tiered approaches to environmental health risk assessment (EHRA)
  • Hazard identification and dose–response assessment
  • The development of best practice policy and risk assessment methods for human health and the environment
  • An introduction to the fundamental concepts and terminology used in risk assessment (e.g., human health, ecological)
  • An understanding of available human health and ecological toxicity values
  • In-depth knowledge about the fundamental components of a human health, and ecological risk assessment, how they compare and contrast, and how their outcomes are integrated and applied in practice
  • An understanding of the basic components of dose-response assessment and the differences between the current default approaches for developing risk and reference values for cancer and non-cancer human health effects.

Demonstration of contaminated site assessment and remediation technologies

Half-day outdoor demonstration of site characterisation and remediation technologies will be organised. Full-scale soil and groundwater remediation technologies, and drilling, geophysical, and sampling and field analysis equipment will be exhibited for demonstration. The site is not contaminated and transportation will be provided. Participants should have appropriate safety gear, such as rain gear, casual work clothes, and good walking shoes. Cameras and camcorders are permitted.

Environmental Risk Communication

  • Identifying and describing issues within existing environmental conditions
  • Environmental risk stakeholders
  • The sensitivity of information sharing and decision-making: situations that are volatile and uncertain.
  • Effective risk communication among risk managers and between risk managers and receptors
  • Facilitating communication among responders while simultaneously communicating to
  • receptors (e.g., the public at large)
  • Point of contact for communicating risk (e.g., communications officer) and a designated place to host media interaction and engage risk stakeholders early in the process
  • Build a relationship with the local community – “invest in being known”, including the establishment of feedback mechanism
  • Public speaking engagements and involvement at community meetings
  • Reaching the proper audience through the proper means at the proper time is a

Instructor profiles

Professor Ravi Naidu, Managing Director and CEO, CRC CARE, Australia; Global Innovation Chair and Director, GCER, UoN

Professor Ravi Naidu is the Chief Executive Officer, Managing Director and Chief Scientist of the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE). Professor Naidu was also the Founding Director of the Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation (CERAR). He has researched environmental contaminants, bioavailability, and remediation for over 25 years and has gained advanced leadership and management experience in environmental sustainability throughout this period. Professor Naidu has co-authored over 500 research articles and technical publications and six patents, and co-edited 10 books and over 55 book chapters in the field of soil and environmental sciences. He has also supervised over 30 PhD completions.

Mr Scott Warner, Principal Hydrogeologist (Environment & Health) at Ramboll, USA

Scott Warner has nearly 30 years’ experience in water resource consulting, development of innovative and sustainable remediation approaches, and business consulting regarding environmental issues. His projects have been located in many parts of the world including North and South America, Australia, Europe and Hong Kong.

Scott has substantial experience providing consultation on regulatory matters and has guided clients through land development and reuse issues. He was the project director and a lead designer for an innovative groundwater remediation system in New York State, USA that received the 2011 National Ground Water Association Outstanding Remediation Award.

Scott has prepared more than 50 publications on the subject of groundwater remediation, hydraulics, and climate change considerations, is co-editor of a book on dense non-aqueous phase liquid characterization and remediation published by the American Chemical Society.

Dr Paul Nathanail, Managing Director, Land Quality Management Ltd, UK

Paul Nathanail is a Chartered Geologist and Specialist in Land Condition (broadly akin to an Auditor) who combines consultancy, research and training in all aspects of risk based contaminated land management. Paul's team provide tailored training and support to Local Authorities across the UK. Three of his former Masters students now working for local authorities are members, along with Paul, of the national contaminated land expert panel. He is the lead author of the UK standard guide on asbestos in soil and of the UK’s largest compilation of soil screening values. Paul is well known to us here in Australia as a regular contributor to CRC CARE’s CleanUp conferences and was the recipient of a CRC CARE Fellowship. He also delivered the 2017 Brian Robinson Memorial Lecture.

Dr Bruce Kennedy, CRC CARE

Bruce Kennedy is CRC CARE's Executive Policy Advisor and heads the CRC's Best Practice Policy program, which includes responsibility for developing guidance for the remediation of contaminated sites. Bruce was previously Executive Officer of the National Environment Protection Council (NEPC) and the Environment Protection and Heritage Council, and Executive Director of the NEPC Service Corporation. He was responsible for national policy development for environmental protection matters within the remit of the Councils, including the assessment of site contamination. Prior to taking up his roles with NEPC, he was a manager with the Western Australian EPA. He has qualifications in chemistry (BSc, PhD) and management (MBA), and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

Dr Sreenivasulu Chadalavada, CRC CARE

Dr Sreenivasulu Chadalavada is Research Manager and Senior Hydrogeologist at CRC CARE. Sreeni is also Conjoint Senior Lecturer at GCER, University of Newcastle, Australia. He is responsible for managing the research projects of CRC CARE and conducts research in hydrogeology and mathematical modelling of groundwater flow and pollutant transport. Sreeni’s current research involves developing various models for simulation of contaminant transport in the environment. Sreeni is also currently engaged in teaching Hydrogeology and supervising Masters and PhD students at University of Newcastle. Sreeni is involved with writing the source codes for developing numerical simulation models which help in decision making process to manage the contamination.

Dr Dawit Bekele, University of Newcastle, Australia

Dawit is Research Fellow and Senior Hydrogeologist at GCER, UON conducting and directing environmental project and research in the assessment, remediation and management of contaminated sites.  He has over 15 years’ experience in the environmental field. Dawit has consulted on various contaminated land investigation and remediation projects and has delivered pragmatic, sustainable and cost-effective solutions.  He is lead soil and groundwater remediation at GCER developing innovative technology for managing contaminated sites.
