Event description

Startups promise a world that large corporates cannot compete with: challenging and exciting problems to solve; unparalleled flexibility and work culture and purpose-driven projects (not to mention the free snacks and ping pong tables). Those who do make the jump can often find the transition is not all it’s cracked up to be, apricot muffins and single origin coffee aside.

With startups operating on a different playing field to corporates, it’s critical to have a foundational understanding of this new world before making the leap.

Students in this course can expect to:

  • Develop an understanding of the differences between startups and corporates

  • Identify key skills required to work in a startup

  • Identify steps and resources you can use to facilitate your transition

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Startups vs Corporates: How do startups differ in their approach and execution of business to traditional corporates?

  • Startup Skills: What skills do startup employers look for in employees? How are these different to skills found in traditional corporate roles?

  • Inside A Startup: A look into how a startup operates, its day-to-day functions, and how it is operationally different to corporate life.

  • The First Step: Unpacking the process and strategies you can use to set yourself up for success in making the transition from corporate to startup.

  • The Good, Bad, and Ugly: Addressing common concerns, fears, and misconceptions about working for a startup, or making the transition from corporate to startup.

Course format:

This is an online Masterly Micro Course, delivered using a new learning model that maximises student to teacher and student to student interaction. We believe in active learning and teaching meaningful, relevant and transferable skills. We won't bore you with pre-recorded lecture videos or pretend a discussion forum is Socratic learning... We also cool words like Socratic.

Here’s how it works for this Masterly Micro Course:

  • There are 2 live classes: one on the 22nd January from 6.30pm to 7.30pm AEDT and one on the 29th January from 6.30pm to 7.30pm AEDT. You'll be able to join these classes from a desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile

  • There will be 2 practical projects over the duration of the course

  • You'll receive feedback on these practical projects and to close the loop, be asked to reflect on what you've learned at the end of the week based on the live class, project and feedback

  • You will connect with and interact regularly with the other students in the course via a dedicated Slack group
