SPEAKER
Sana Bharadwaj completed her BSc with Honours in Linguistics at UWA in 2014 and is currently a PhD student specializing in Sociolinguistics.
Born in India and brought up in Malaysia, Fiji and Australia, she has always been fascinated by the interaction between language and culture.
Her research interests include language variation and change in multi-ethnic communities and cross-cultural communication, with particular focus on the sociolinguistic study of English in the Indian diaspora of Australia.
ABSTRACT
The last decade has witnessed a growing interest in documenting language variation and change in the Indian diaspora in locales as varied as the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand. However, the language situation of the Indian diaspora in Australia, one of the largest groups of Asian migrants to the country, remains virtually unexplored.
In this presentation, Sana will reflect on stories of migration from the Indian community in Australia, and explore how linguistic and cultural heritage interact with transnational ties and language ideologies to shape migrants’ linguistic behaviour and ethnic identity in the context of a rapidly changing, globalized world.
