‘Knitting in public turns the interiority of the domestic outward.’ (Bratich & Brush, 2011)
Feminist thinkers and artists have long contemplated the cultural politics of crafts associated with women, particularly textile production. Kate Just’s knitted work In my skin, currently on display in (Unladylike Acts), is an invitation to think about this history of thinking and writing. In order to explore this work’s impact and meaning, the session will be conducted in the spirit of a ‘knitting circle’ where participants will experientially investigate the ongoing links between feminist activism, women’s crafts, and the praxis of women’s studies. BYO handicraft!
Join Chantal Bourgault Du Coudray, Lecturer in Gender Studies at UWA, to contemplate Kate Just’s In my skin.

(Un)ladylike Acts: Recent Acquisitions from the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art
29 August - 5 December 2020
Taking its title from Madison Bycroft's 2013 video work, (Un)ladylike acts for every lady lacking ( A Gift to the King), this exhibition features recent donations and acquisitions from the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art.
'Women artists' frequently wrestle with the conundrum of being defined as such, as patriarchal expectations associated with that position can be reinforced by attempts at both celebration and critique.
This selection of artworks variously reject, embrace and wield gendered perspectives, offering a provocative survey of attitudes toward art practice and its politics.
Featuring artwork by Penny Bovell, Nancy Borlase, Madison Bycroft, Sarah Contos, Kate Just, Maria Kozic and Toni Warburton.
Devised by former CCWA curator Gemma Weston and delivered by current CCWA curator Lee Kinsella, (Un)ladylike Acts brings together a selection of contemporary artworks that challenge expectations of women artists and the work they produce.
For more information visit the exhibition website.
