Sirius Chamber Ensemble was formed in 2011 by Ian Sykes and Dr Alison Evans and is committed to premiering new works by Australian composers in a friendly, accessible atmosphere. Our regular concert series is performed by a core ensemble of Melissa Coleman (flute), Ian Sykes (clarinet), Alison Evans (bassoon), Vanessa Tammetta (violin), Clare Kahn (cello) and Claire Howard Race (piano), augmented by guest artists. The name ‘Sirius’ pays homage to the flagship of the First Fleet, the H.M.S Sirius that sailed from Portsmouth, England to Port Jackson during 1787-1788.

Recent and upcoming collaborators include Blush Opera, composers Alan Holley, Eve Duncan, Dr Paul Smith, Dr Corinna Bonshek as well as composer and saxophonist Spike Mason with whom we recently recorded Flying, an album of new works for saxophone, winds, strings and piano.

Ian Sykes is a full-time member of the NSW Police Band, and also maintains a busy career as a freelance musician, dividing his time between chamber and orchestral music, music theatre and pedagogy. Ian has performed in productions of Mary Poppins – The Musical, Phantom of the Opera, South Pacific and West Side Story. As a founding member and Musical Director of Sirius Chamber Ensemble, Ian has toured throughout Australia and performed new works by Australian composers including Alan Holley, Paul Smith and Christine Draeger. Ian has performed with Sydney Philharmonia, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, The Metropolitan Orchestra, as well as the education programs for Musica Viva and Sydney Opera House. A career highlight was performing for HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2006.

Benjamin Burton is a talented young pianist with a passion for accompanying vocal and instrumental performances. In his role as accompanist, Ben has performed all over the country, and has worked for Opera Australia, Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian Institute of Music, while also working as a freelance accompanist. Highlights over the last couple of years have included recording with the ABC (appearing on the CD Ballads of a Pleasant Life with Peter Coleman-Wright and the Nexas Quartet), performing with Moorambilla Voices for the Royal Visit to Dubbo, and giving recitals with Daniela Leska at Sydney Town Hall and the Polish Embassy. Ben was awarded 1st Prize in the 2017 Sydney Song Prize, and 2nd Best Pianist in the 2016 MIETTA National Art Song Competition. During 2020 Ben became a creator of backing tracks and is greatly enjoying the return to live music performances happening in 2021.
