Freud for Writers

In this accessible, engaging and interactive seminar, psychiatrist Warren Ward will provide you with an introduction to the ideas of Freud and their practical application to writing practice. You will learn techniques to access the rich, imaginative world of the unconscious and better understand the motives, conflicts and desires that drive human behaviour, including those of your characters.

Learning Outcomes


  • Gain an understanding of Freud’s ideas including the unconscious, psychological stages of development, conflict, defence, and transference

  • An appreciation of Freud’s influence on modern literature

  • Understand the unconscious motives and universal desires and conflicts of your characters.

About Warren Ward

Warren Ward is a Brisbane-based psychiatrist and writer with longstanding interests in philosophy, literature and European history. He has published more than 35 articles in academic journals and is regularly asked to speak at professional and community events. His writing has appeared in New Philosopher and been shortlisted for the Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship, the QWC/Hachette Manuscript Development Program and the Hardcopy Professional Development Program for Emerging Australian Writers. He has had more than 20 years’ experience as a psychotherapist and supervisor of psychotherapy trainees. He is currently working on a book about the love lives of seven European philosophers.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This course is for participants aged 18 years and above. If you are accessing the QWC member tickets you may be asked to show proof of membership.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Queensland Writers Centre is located on Level 2 of the State Library of Queensland.

There are several parking and transportation options:

  • Parking underneath State Library or Queensland Museum costs $16 per entry.
  • There is limited street parking available on Merivale Street, Montague Road and Hope Street at an hourly rate.
  • A drop-off point is located on the ring road outside SLQ, next to the bus stops.
  • The Cultural Precinct BusWay and South Brisbane Train Station are a short walk from State Library.

What can I bring into the event?

You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary.

The venue runs quite a cool air-conditioning system so we advise bringing a jacket, jumper or cardigan with you.

What's the refund policy?

If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
