Event description
Disaster and Critical Incident Response for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Persons

About this event

This workshop is free to participants - jointly funded under the Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements 2018.

Although funding for this product has been provided by both the Australian and Queensland Governments, the material contained herein does not necessarily represent the views of either Government.

Walking in Good Spirit

In the wake of a disaster or critical incident, crisis and distress is experienced throughout the whole community. The support community members provide to each other is vital and Psychological First Aid provides a model for this response.

Walking in Good Spirit takes a specialised perspective and supports participants to consider and respond to the unique needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members at these times.

For the individual, it seeks to:

  • Reduce the initial distress
  • Foster short and long-term adaptive functioning (build resilience)
  • Minimise the risk of further harm

Outcomes

Participants gain skills and knowledge to provide support:

  • to someone immediately following a disaster or critical event
  • until the person is less overwhelmed and more able to cope, and/or
  • until more appropriate professional help is available
  • for the specific needs of Indigenous people in times of disasters
