Dear Music Teachers,
The Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) and the Australian Society for Music Education (ASME) invite you to a free teacher workshop introducing the music education kit for Lorraine Milne's Maiden Voyage - An Australian Song Cycle.
The Maiden Voyage music education kit is the latest resource to be developed and released by the Australian Music Centre to support music educators in presenting exciting new orginal Australian works as part of their classroom programs.
Author of the music resource kit, Julie Montague, will lead participants through a range of activities from the resource, in the presence of the composer.
Music educators, musicians and music lovers across all settings are invited to join us for this special workshop exploring the education resource, and immediately afterwards for the official launch of the kit.
About Maiden Voyage - an Australian Song Cycle
Words and Music: Lorraine Milne
Spotlighting the experiences and achievements of ordinary and extraordinary Australian women in historical and contemporary settings
“But boss, she’s not the right man for the job!”
What a line! It became the genesis of Maiden Voyage – and A Woman Is Not the Right Man, the first song to be written, eventually became the ninth song in the cycle.
The focus then shifted to spotlighting the experiences and achievements of ordinary and extraordinary Australian women in historical and contemporary settings.
The stories woven through Maiden Voyage embrace convict ships and prostitutes, free settlers, currency born, the fight for female suffrage, English migration between the two world wars, survival in the outback, the cultural drain, the Vietnam war, GDP and what is valued and finally a celebration of the legacy of these extraordinary women, many of whom were not recognised for their achievements in their lifetimes.
This event is a celebration of the UNESCO International Arts Education Week, and the opening of the MGSE's new StudioFive Arts Education space.
